For about 6 months or so, I was playing with a set of par time skill drills that are shot on a single target. My desire to refine these came from having to sometimes train on an indoor range where the environment is too noisy for a timer to hear your shots and also where movement and other options are limited. The development of the fixed par time let me set my timer once at the beginning of the training session and leave it alone. It can also be run with a partner and a stop watch if you lack a timer. The drill set uses a simple scoring system - 1 point per hole, and if you do not have an IDPA target, the 10-8 target or anything else with a 6" square head and 8" center circle will do. During the development of the drill set, I changed the scoring system - it used to use the whole target - and also increased the focus on accuracy vs. just spraying the target full of holes and getting more points. The drills cover the gamut of skills, to include: 1 hand and freestyle shooting, manipulations for loading and/or malfunction clearance, multiple rounds on a single target, driving the gun target to target, transition from big/fast target to small/slow target, shooting on small targets and big targets. Some of the revisions were brought forth after returning from the Rogers Shooting School. I liked their emphasis on ambidexterity in shooting and being able to manipulate the gun efficiently with both hands or only one hand, so I rewrote my drill set a little.

In running this drill set, you will probably want to score each string as you go to better keep track of the holes. For clarification, the "high ready" position is with the gun retracted, at about chin level, muzzle pointed toward the target.

In running this course of fire, it is important to select the correct par time for your skill level. While no hard cutoff point has been set, you should aim to be able to score 50-55 points at a particular par time. This places the correct emphasis on proper execution of the techniques as well as the necessary accuracy.

It is not set up for everyone to clean, but rather to set a goal to work toward. The best that I have been able to do so far is 61 pts on the 5 second par, with a 1911 in .45. If your skill development is fairly even, each of the strings should take a similar amount of time (plus or minus .5 to 1.0 seconds).

Thanks to the guys who have shot the early revisions of this and provided detailed feedback on each string - Tim, Joe R., Ted S., Shay, and David L.
